Celebrating the Names of God
A Gentle, Faith-Filled Reflection for Women Walking Through Every Season of Life
Daniel was reading the Bible with his young son, James, when the boy stopped him right in the middle of the story of Hagar in Genesis 16.
You remember Hagar — the woman who ran into the wilderness carrying more pain than she knew how to hold. Yet in that lonely, desperate place, she became the first person recorded in Scripture to give God a name.
She called Him:
“El Roi — the God who sees me.”
(Genesis 16:13)

Little James looked up at his daddy with big, curious eyes and asked, “Why does God have so many names?”
Daniel smiled and said, “Well, your name is James. But I call you my Jimmy-Jam. Your mama calls you Jamie. Your friends call you Jimmy. Lots of names, but one boy. Each name depends on the relationship.”
He ruffled his son’s hair and added, “Different names mean different kinds of closeness. They tell the story of how we know each other.”
And isn’t that the truth?
God’s names aren’t random titles. They are invitations—reminders of who He is to you in this very moment. Names spoken from the lips of people who encountered God in their darkest valleys, their hardest battles, and their sweetest victories.
So today, let’s sit a minute together—me and you, sister—and reflect on a few of God’s names and the tender beauty behind each one.
Especially for us women walking through the wiser, deeper seasons of life, these names can steady us in ways we didn’t even know we needed.
Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide
In Genesis 22, Abraham climbs a mountain carrying unthinkable obedience—his beloved son walking beside him. Isaac notices there’s no lamb and asks the dreaded question:
“Where is the offering?”
Abraham, holding on to faith with trembling hands, whispers,
“God will provide.”
And He does.
Just before Abraham lifts the knife, heaven intervenes. A ram is caught in the thicket, and Abraham names God Jehovah Jireh — the Lord will provide.
For those of us who have watched bills pile up, who worry about adult children, who stretch groceries and energy and prayers, this name is a soft place to land.
God does not ask you to manufacture miracles.
He doesn’t expect you to hold everything together.
He simply asks you to walk your mountain… and trust Him with the provision.
Sister, the God who hung the stars is not blind to your needs.
He will provide in His timing, in His way, with His perfect wisdom.
Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Is My Banner
When Israel faced the Amalekites in Exodus 17, Moses stood on the hill with hands lifted high. As long as his hands were raised, Israel prevailed. When he grew tired, Aaron and Hur stood beside him and held him up.
After the victory, Moses named God Jehovah Nissi —
“The Lord is my banner.”
In ancient battles, the banner told the soldiers who they belonged to. It gave them courage when their knees shook.
Some of us know that shaking well.
Praying over prodigal children.
Sitting in doctors’ offices.
Walking through grief, loneliness, or fear.
But hear this, darlin’:
God is your banner.
He is your rallying point.
When you feel battle-weary, you lift your eyes and remember Who stands over you.
You do not fight alone.
You never have.
Jehovah Shalom: The Lord Is Peace
When the angel greets Gideon with “Mighty warrior,” he is hiding in fear, scraping wheat together just to survive. God doesn’t answer his “Why is this happening?”
Instead, God gives him an assignment and a promise:
“I am with you.”

Gideon, still trembling, still unsure, builds an altar and names God Jehovah Shalom —
“The Lord is peace.”
Nothing in his life had changed yet.
The enemy was still there.
The hunger was still real.
The hard assignment still ahead.
Yet peace arrived anyway.
Sister, God gives peace before the breakthrough, not just after.
Your situation doesn’t have to be calm for your heart to be.
Peace isn’t the absence of trouble.
Peace is the presence of God.
Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts
When David faced Goliath, he didn’t rely on armor, experience, or skill. He walked forward in the name of Jehovah Sabaoth —
“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
David understood something many of us forget:
When the Lord of Hosts enters the battle, victory is already written.
Whether you’re facing spiritual warfare, a medical diagnosis, financial hardship, or a mountain of discouragement, this name of God declares:
“The Lord fights for you; you need only be still.”
(Exodus 14:14)
Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply stand your ground and whisper His name.
The Intimacy of a Name
Each name of God is a window into His heart.
A reminder of how deeply He loves you.
A declaration of Who He will be in your hardest moments.
Maybe this season, God is revealing Himself as your Provider.
Or maybe He’s showing Himself as your Banner, your Peace, or your Defender.
Whatever you’re facing today, He is already there—steady, faithful, and more than enough.
A Prayer for You…
Father, reveal Yourself to me (to us) in a fresh way. Show me the name I need to cling to in this season of my life. Remind me that You are my Provider, my Banner, my Peace, and the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Thank You for being exactly what my heart needs. I love You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I have gifts for you from my heart to yours. May they bless you greatly!
