Healthy Living means different things to different people. To me, it’s being able to wake up in the morning refreshed, be productive all day long and still have energy to be present with and enjoy my family at night. Not only does Healthy Living mean different things to different people, but also during different stages of our lives.
At various times in our lives, we have more energy than others, more commitments than at other times, and so on.
When we are young we have so much energy, we go all day at school or at work and then play at night with our friends and/or family. I remember after I passed through this stage of life thinking; “I wish I could have bottled that energy of my youth”! On the dietary front, “anything goes” was the name of the game. And where did I put it?? I didn’t gain an ounce! My only concern was acne. And boys.
Fast forward to being a young wife. Being a young married woman was a piece of cake. I was organized, scheduled my days out and basically had enough energy to get through my days and nights without skipping a beat. My time was my own and my nights were filled with deep sleep. I was in love, and the world was “ours”.
Motherhood, boy howdy, nothing prepares you for this right?! This was the beginning of losing my energy. I swear it just…left. Up all night with babies, they ruled my world (as it should be) and it was a transition for me. No more organization, no more precise schedules and no more uninterrupted sleep filled nights.
I haven’t entered the stage of Grandmother yet. I am still in the “waiting” phase of the empty nester syndrome. Waiting for children to get their proverbial act together and give me grandchildren. But during this time of our lives, our days and nights are changing along with our hormone levels which are pretty much non-existent. Our lives are slowing down and our schedules are our own but our emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our lives are changing as we age.
We almost seem to come full circle in our “golden older years”. After priorities of husbands and children then comes almost a void in later life, and it’s a great time to fill it with YOU time. Your dreams, your interests, your physical/mental/emotional and spiritual health priorities.
During the current time of my life, post-menopause and a partial empty nester, I hope to share with you what works for me, and in the process, I hope you can find inspiration and encouragement for your everyday life in a Simple Healthy Way.
